The BEST Way to Elope in Nordegg! Abraham Lake Heli-Elopement
Winter-time Heli-Elopement in beautiful Nordegg, Alberta with Madyn & Hayden
Alberta Rockies Wedding & Elopement Photography
We kicked off our 2023 with an absolutely beautiful heli-elopement in Nordegg on the Eastern Slopes of the Alberta Rockies. Think Banff, but without the crowds! This is an area very dear to our hearts and a place we spend as much time as running a business and chasing around after 4 kids allows! So, inevitably, we have decided to combine our favourite place with our business and will be offering some special rates for Elopements in the area - contact us if you would like to hear more!
The Nordegg and Abraham Lake Area is just such a wonderful place to be! Stretching all the way from the Hamlet of Nordegg itself, the David Thompson corridor boasts azure blue glacial lakes, waterfalls and peaks which rival it’s western neighbour; the world famous Banff National Park, but is still relatively off the tourist trail, We’ve worked and camped here in every season and it just seems to get better and better the more you discover.
For us, this is literally the perfect place to elope or have an intimate wedding and we’re excited to be talking much more about this in the coming months - keep an eye on our website and Instagram for updates!

The story of the day began at an acreage just outside of Rocky Mountain House. Our bride and groom had tied the knot officially a couple of weeks beforehand, so today was about getting the wedding gear on and celebrating in style with family and friends. After snapping some getting ready pictures for our couple (and learning they are totally comfortable in front of the camera!) the plan is to head out to Windy Point ( a beautiful outcrop on the shores of Abraham Lake) and then onto Rockies Heli Canada to find a spot for some spectacular bride and groom portraits.
Windy Point, Abraham Lake
By the time we left Rocky, we were all running a little late, not particularly helped by getting stopped by RCMP while trying to make up a little time (Oops)! Luckily the officer was understanding about the rush and sent us on our way pretty quickly! No harm done and we all arrive safely at the formals spot.
So Windy Point lives up to its name! In all seasons. In fact, we were blessed with some pretty remarkable weather for early Jan (2 weeks prior windchills had been in excess of -40) but, it was veeeery windy!!
Traditionally Family formals aren’t usually the most exciting part of a wedding day, but this was just SO much fun! It was somewhat rapid fire as we were up against the clock for the heli flight but the families were totally up for braving the conditions, and for me the wind just adds another layer of emotion to the images! We absolutely love them!
We would have happily stayed here shooting portraits all afternoon, but we had a flight to catch!
Rockies Heli Canada
Rockies Heli have been operating in the area for over 20 years and even in a bit of wind we all felt totally safe with our experienced pilot, Ralph, who took us up to a beautiful spot he had coined ‘The Wedding Knoll’. It was both mine and Pegs first time heli-flight and it really was something watching winter storms roll over the peaks as Ralph expertly set us down in the snow. We were up around 7,500ft and while it was cold, it wasn’t that brutal cold you might expect high in the mountains January, and Madyn and Hayden absolutely made the most of their time up there! They absolutely rocked it and just looked SO happy and natural together. Madyn was even brave enough to ditch the jacket for long enough for us to get some beautiful bridal portraits. Last thing to do was pop some champagne and enjoy the flight back down the mountain.
What an incredible way to elope and what a stunning part of the world we call home. Madyn and Hayden- we’re so happy our paths crossed and thank you so much for inviting us along to document your adventure- it was such a privilege to tell your story!
